When I found out I was pregnant I was completely overjoyed, but petrified about the birth process. Long term negative beliefs about labour convinced me it would be excruciatingly painful and I simply could not fathom how the baby would get out without causing major damage and pain. The fear became stronger as the pregnancy developed and I became highly alert to negative birth stories, they were everywhere and it seemed everyone wanted to remind me of how bad and how long the labour experience was likely to be. (why do they do that? it’s so unhelpful)
By chance an old friend got in touch, she had recently given birth to her first child using hypnobirthing techniques and described the event as peaceful, all natural and at HOME! This it really got me thinking. Admittedly my first thoughts were along the lines of ‘Why didn’t she need to be at hospital in case something went wrong?’ but then I started to believe that maybe there was another option for me, maybe I didn’t need to dread the birth, and that maybe Hypnobirthing could help me with that. So I booked a course.
It was the best thing I could possibly have done! The course was fantastic. I was suddenly armed with factual information that actually made sense of the birth process. This empowered me to begin trusting my ability to bring my baby into the world in a kinder, nicer way. The sessions also taught us ways of relieving stress, of being kinder to ourselves and to each other, and over a period of a few short weeks I was able to experience and master wonderfully deep relaxation and self-hypnosis techniques. I found myself letting go of my fears and started building a new idea of how awesome it might be to birth at home.
Unfortunately my hopes of a home birth were short lived as my son was identified as breech. But armed with the techniques and skills we had gained from the Hypnobirthing course, my husband and I were able to negotiate the twists and turns of birth with an amazing sense of calm. Even though we knew a C-section was likely I continued to peacefully allow my body and baby get on with the job, and boy did they! Without the need for any medicinal pain relief or any real discomfort (other than a feeling of continually needing a number 2) I went from waters breaking to full dilation within 5 hours! (much to the suprise of the midwife and consultant, as due to my calmness and ability to listen, talk and reason through my surges they presumed my progress was slow)
Our beautiful boy was then born by ‘emergency’ C-section, but the circumstance of his birth didn’t matter at all. We were so calm and clear that we were able to make informed decisions, without panic or anxiety.
I feel very lucky to have stumbled across Hypnobirthing during my pregnancy and I dread to think how my birth experience may have been without it! Because of Hypnobirthing, my baby boy was born to parents who were calm and happy despite the not so ideal situation, and I firmly believe that the positivity I felt also contributed to my speedy recovery and ability to breastfeed. I have never felt so empowered, so focussed and so blessed, I cannot speak highly enough of its positive effects on me, both as a mother and as a person.
As a direct result of my experience I decided to retrain as a Clinical Hypnotherapist specialising in Hypnobirthing, and I now have the absolute pleasure of working couples in Cardiff and the surrounding areas to help them achieve peaceful happier pregnancies and births too.
